Welcome to the Benhur Lee Lab!

Everything YOU want to know about COVID-19 Vaccines: Hear Ira Flatow interview Benhur on Science Friday (Jan 29, 2021)

Viruses are the best cell biologists.

How viruses enter, replicate, and exit their host cells is an evolutionary record of the most successful cell biological strategies that have survived eons of culling by natural selection.

The Benhur Lee Laboratory focuses on exploring how viruses co-opt basic cell biological processes to complete their life cycle and the myriad strategies used by viruses to propagate themselves. By focusing on common threads that underlie viral entry and budding processes, our studies aim not only to enhance our understanding of cell biology on a molecular level, but also reveal targets for therapeutic interventions against a broader spectrum of viral pathogens.

Benhur Lee, MD, is the Ward-Coleman Chair in Microbiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Prof Benhur Lee is passionate about #mentoring and #SciComm. Since his appointment to the American Society of Virology (ASV) Communications Committee (2019), he has devoted even more time to #SciComm via Twitter (@VirusWhisperer) and other media platforms. He was recently elected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (FAAM, 2020). He dedicates his election to all past and present members of #ViralLeeLab. He is extraordinarily proud of his lab - they WORK hard and PLAY hard. And he continually asks his lab members to post updated pictures of our outings— see pictures below— (HINT!!). #WorkLifeBalance is essential.
